The Utah Arts Festival was this weekend. Given that I was adverturing in the wilds of Salt Lake and Park City on Friday and Saturday, I only managed to get to it Sunday evening.
These folks were particularly snappy in their dancing. They eventually moved into the dance floor right in front of the stage to cheers from the crowd. The Preservation Hall Jazz band was playing. I then moseyed on over to watch Vile Blue Shade, a local SLC band at the Big Mouth Cafe stage. VBS is another in a long line of excellent SLC rock bands. They also openly smoked and drank their PBR on stage, violating several laws. That act of rebellion was made extra-amusing since the Big Mouth Cafe stage was right in front of the City & County building.

The Sphynx & the Monument to the Preisthood
I love Utah!
I suppose I should write something about my various adventures at Gilgal Garden over the years.
Not tonight. It is too hot for that.
What is that thing, you ask? It is a Joseph Smith sphynx? But what is it, you persist? It is a Joseph Smith Sphynx.
My apologies to Trent Harris for appropriating his excellent dialog.

Dramatic Chipmunk
Thank you Boing Boing and whoever created this masterpiece of drama for giving me a sore gut. I think it sums up all of Shakespeare in 5 seconds.
(And I know it is not a Chipmunk, but their title was much funnier than rodent-related title I could come up with.)

Chiaroscuro Clintino
Another experiment for the Department of Art and Visual Communications group on flickr. This is an 8 second exposure. I look so intense because I'm holding my breath, sitting still, and looking like I'm typing. I really dig how the light plays on the camera in long exposures.
I suppose 8 seconds isn't really all that long. Fun stuff this.

How ill this taper burns
I was just goofing around with the long exposure setting since the assignment for the group "Department of Art and Visual Communications" is to take a long exposure. I made this one with my handy flashlight and it reminded me of the scene in Shakespeare's Julius Caesar where Caesar's ghost confronts his assassin:
Brutus: "How ill this taper burns. Ha! Who comes here?
I think it is the weakness of mine eyes
That shapes this monstrous apparation.
It comes upon me. Art thou anything?
Art thou some god, some angel, or some devil,
That mak'st my blood cold and my hair to stare?
Speak to me what thou art."
Ghost: "Thy evil spirit, Brutus." (Shakespeare, Julius Caesar Act 4, Scene 2, lines 327-334)
As in Macbeth and Hamlet, there is a quesy hallucinatory nature to confrontations with ghost in Shakespeare. Innevitably it never leads to any good end, and is always accompanied by madness.

New!
I haven't been writing that much lately, mostly because I haven't been feeling the urge to write. What I have been feeling, however, is the urge to take pictures. My new Nikon D40 should assist in satisfying this urge.
Three things I should have written about, but didn't:
1) Nathan's return to the US.
2) The terrible scooter accident I passed on 39th south.
3) My spectacular bowling game (well that is mentioned on the Bowling Syndicate, so I guess it doesn't count.)
