A meteoroid is the proper term for a small rocky body out there in space that would become a meteor if it fell into the Earth's atmosphere and caused the consequent atmospheric light show that meteors provide on high. (Meteor comes from the Greek meteoron "lofty"). If a meteor happens to make it to the earth, its remnant is then called a meteorite.
Fascinating!
